Injured Civilians Overseas and Defense Base Act

Representing Injured Civilian Employees of Defense Contractors

One way the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are different from most others in American history is that many functions previously performed by the military itself are today the responsibility of government contractors.

From food service to some security functions, civilian personnel employed by companies like Blackwater, KBR, DynCorp and other Halliburton subsidiaries are working overseas under sometimes perilous conditions.

When soldiers are injured overseas, they have a right to medical treatment and certain other benefits. What about injured civilians overseas? These injured workers have a right to file for compensation for medical expenses and a portion of their wages under the Defense Base Act.

Help for Injured Civilians

An extension of the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, the Defense Base Act is a federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP).
Injuried Civilians

It's like a federal workers' compensation program for civilian employees of government contractors working overseas as part of the defense effort.

At James E. Smith, Jr., P.A., in Columbia, South Carolina, our lawyers represent injured employees of government contractors.
